1. Junior Accountant / Accounting Technician (Entry-level)
Overview:
As a Junior Accountant you will learn foundational skills, support senior team members, and gain hands-on experience in various accounting functions.
Core Competencies:
- Technical Accounting Knowledge: Basic understanding of accounting principles, financial statements and information, and reporting requirements.
- Attention to Detail: Ability to work with numbers accurately and efficiently. Organization and Time Management: Managing multiple tasks and meeting deadlines
in a fast-paced environment. - Communication Skills: Clear written and verbal communication with colleagues and clients.
- Software Proficiency: Familiarity with accounting software (QuickBooks, CaseWare, TaxPrep, etc.).
Educational and Experience Requirements:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree enrolment in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- CPA Enrollment: You should begin the process of enrolling in the CPA program and take the necessary prerequisites if you haven’t already.
- Experience: No prior experience is required. The position is typically suited to new hires or those with less than 2 years of experience in an accounting role.
Responsibilities:
- Assist in the preparation of financial statements, information and tax returns.
- Support senior accountants with assurance and compilation engagements.
- Maintain accurate records of financial transactions.
- Prepare working papers and supporting documentation.
- Perform reconciliations for clients’ accounts.
2. Staff Accountant/Intermediate Accountant
Overview:
The Staff Accountant (or Intermediate Accountant) position is designed for individuals who have gained foundational experience in accounting and are now looking to take on more complex tasks and responsibilities. The Intermediate Staff Accountant will work closely with senior accountants and managers, providing accounting services to clients and contributing to the firm’s overall success. This position is a critical step in the progression toward managerial and senior leadership roles within the firm.
Core Competencies:
- Technical Accounting Proficiency: Ability to prepare, review, and analyze financial statements in compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
Knowledge of tax laws and regulations, including the preparation of corporate and individual tax returns, tax planning, and identifying tax-saving opportunities for clients.
Experience assisting with assurance engagements. Proficiency with common accounting software. - Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to review financial information, identify discrepancies, and offer recommendations for resolution.
- Communication and Client Interaction: Ability to communicate complex financial information clearly and professionally to client. Developing and maintaining
professional relationships with clients, addressing client needs and concerns, and providing timely responses to queries. Work effectively as part of a team to complete
assignments and meet deadlines. - Time Management and Organization: Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and deadlines while maintaining a high standard of accuracy.
- Professionalism and Ethical Standards: Familiarity with professional codes of conduct and regulatory standards governing the accounting profession (e.g., CPA Code of Conduct, CPA Handbook, etc.).
Educational and Experience Requirements:
- Education: Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance, and progress in the CPA program.
- Experience: Typically, 2–3 years of experience in accounting, assurance and taxation.
- CPA Requirements: Enrollment in the CPA PEP program and completion of at least one Core module, elective or equivalent.
Responsibilities:
- Assist with the preparation of annual financial statements for clients in accordance with applicable accounting standards
- Prepare corporate tax returns, individual income tax returns, GST/HST filings, and other tax documents.
- Provide assistance to clients regarding accounting queries, financial performance, and business advisory needs.
- Maintain proper documentation of client files, ensuring that workpapers, tax returns, and financial statements are complete, accurate, and compliant with regulatory requirements.
- Collaborate with senior accountants, managers, and partners to ensure that client needs are met in a timely and efficient manner.
3. Senior Accountant
Overview:
The Senior Accountant is an important developmental role for individuals who have gained some experience and are ready to take on more responsibility. You’ll be expected to manage client relationships, supervise junior staff, and assist in more complex engagements.
Core Competencies:
- Advanced Technical Accounting Skills: Strong understanding of financial reporting, tax compliance, and assurance standards.
- Leadership and Supervision: Ability to oversee junior accountants and assist in the training and development of team members.
- Problem-Solving: Strong analytical skills to identify issues and provide solutions.
- Client Relationship Management: Ability to communicate with clients to understand their needs and provide proactive advice.
- Project Management: Ability to manage engagements, budgets, timelines, and deliverables.
Educational and Experience Requirements:
- Education: Completion of the CPA PEP program and successful completion of the CFE.
- Experience: Typically, 3–5 years of experience in accounting or assurance, with direct exposure to client work, financial statements, and tax returns.
- CPA Requirements: CPA designation in good standing.
Responsibilities:
- Prepare complex financial statements, tax returns, and other accounting reports.
- Supervise and mentor junior and staff accountants.
- Assist managers in planning, executing, and reviewing assurance and tax engagements.
- Review client documentation and perform detailed analysis.
- Build and maintain client relationships, offering solutions for business needs.
- Ensure compliance with relevant accounting and tax regulations.
4. Manager
Overview:
The Manager position is a leadership role that focuses on overseeing engagements, managing teams, and liaising with clients on strategic matters. Managers take on a more strategic role within the firm, with a focus on growth, profitability, and the delivery of high-quality services.
Core Competencies:
- Advanced Accounting & Taxation Knowledge: Expertise in accounting, assurance, and taxation for various industries.
- Leadership and Team Development: Strong managerial skills, with the ability to lead and develop a team of accountants.
- Client Management: Ability to manage complex client relationships, anticipate client needs, and provide strategic advice.
- Business Development: Actively contributing to firm growth by identifying new business opportunities and expanding existing client relationships.
- Strategic Thinking: Ability to provide strategic insights and recommendations to clients
and the firm.
Educational and Experience Requirements:
- Education: Completion of the CPA PEP program and successful completion of the CFE.
- Experience: Typically, 4–6 years of experience in public accounting, with 1-2 years being post-designation years.
- CPA Requirements: CPA designation in good standing.
Responsibilities:
- Manage client engagements, ensuring that work is completed accurately, on time, and within budget.
- Lead assurance engagements, tax planning, and financial consulting for clients.
- Supervise junior, intermediate and senior accountants, providing training and performance reviews.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients.
- Identify new business opportunities and contribute to the firm’s growth strategy.
- Provide high-level strategic advice to clients on business issues, tax strategies, and financial planning.
