Overview:
The Staff Accountant (or Intermediate Accountant) position is designed for individuals who have gained foundational experience in accounting and are now looking to take on more complex tasks and responsibilities. The Intermediate Staff Accountant will work closely with senior accountants and managers, providing accounting services to clients and contributing to the firm’s overall success. This position is a critical step in the progression toward managerial and senior leadership roles within the firm.

Core Competencies:

  • Technical Accounting Proficiency: Ability to prepare, review, and analyze financial statements in compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
    Knowledge of tax laws and regulations, including the preparation of corporate and individual tax returns, tax planning, and identifying tax-saving opportunities for clients.
    Experience assisting with assurance engagements. Proficiency with common accounting software.
  • Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to review financial information, identify discrepancies, and offer recommendations for resolution.
  • Communication and Client Interaction: Ability to communicate complex financial information clearly and professionally to client. Developing and maintaining
    professional relationships with clients, addressing client needs and concerns, and providing timely responses to queries. Work effectively as part of a team to complete
    assignments and meet deadlines.
  • Time Management and Organization: Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and deadlines while maintaining a high standard of accuracy.
  • Professionalism and Ethical Standards: Familiarity with professional codes of conduct and regulatory standards governing the accounting profession (e.g., CPA Code of Conduct, CPA Handbook, etc.).

Educational and Experience Requirements:

  • Education: Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance, and progress in the CPA program.
  • Experience: Typically, 2–3 years of experience in accounting, assurance and taxation.
  • CPA Requirements: Enrollment in the CPA PEP program and completion of at least one Core module, elective or equivalent.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the preparation of annual financial statements for clients in accordance with applicable accounting standards
  • Prepare corporate tax returns, individual income tax returns, GST/HST filings, and other tax documents.
  • Provide assistance to clients regarding accounting queries, financial performance, and business advisory needs.
  • Maintain proper documentation of client files, ensuring that workpapers, tax returns, and financial statements are complete, accurate, and compliant with regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with senior accountants, managers, and partners to ensure that client needs are met in a timely and efficient manner.
